In which we have milk in a bag

When I lived in Canada, I loved the fact that you could get milk in bags.  No-one in the UK really believed me, though; the idea of having sacks of milk in the fridge that you then popped into special milk jugs just seemed to be too fanciful.   Five years on, however – after many rumours and false sightings – I am extremely pleased to report that our local Sainsbury’s are finally stocking milk in a bag.  Sad, I know, but this made my week.

The jug system is way more complicated than the Canadian one – which consisted merely of a) cutting off the corner of the bag and b) sitting it in the jug.  This one requires clips and piercing nozzles and all sorts of malarkey, but the end result is the same: less waste, bags that can be recycled, and a really great talking point amongst people who haven’t seen them yet.

  1. That is so cool! In Oregon we pride ourselves on a focus on sustainability, but we have nothing like milk in bags. Pathetic since our neighbors to the north have apparently been doing it for some time now.

It’s great that Sainsbury’s is on board.
